Come with me. Today, we're going on a journey... far, far away... and long, long ago.

It is night. A quiet night, in a quiet city, in a valley between dark mountains.

Inside one house, a lamp is glowing. Its light is soft, and gold, and warm.

And then... footsteps. Quick footsteps, coming down the mountain path. Coming closer.

The door opens. And a man comes in, and his heart is trembling.

He has just come down from a cave, high on a mountain. Something happened there tonight that has never happened to anyone in his whole city. Something so big that he is shaking.

And he says only a few words, to the woman waiting in the lamplight.

"Cover me... cover me."

The man is the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. And the woman in the lamplight is his wife.

Her name is Khadijah, radiyallahu anha.

And what she says next... is still remembered, all these years later.

But to understand why he ran home to her, of all the people in the world... we have to go back. Back to a long line of camels... and a woman who knew how to see the truth in people.

Long, long ago, in the city of Makkah, the Kaaba stood in the middle of the valley, and all around it the markets hummed.

Traders shouted. Camels grumbled. Spices filled the air, and cloth, and dust, and the smell of the warm desert.

And in that busy city lived a woman named Khadijah.

She was one of the most respected people in all of Makkah. She came from a noble family. She was wise, and careful, and very good at trade. Her caravans travelled far across the desert, carrying goods to faraway lands, and coming home again.

But people did not only know her for her wealth. They knew her for her goodness.

Because in a city where many people worshipped statues, and many people did unkind things, Khadijah kept her heart clean. So the people of Makkah gave her a special name.

*Aṭ-Ṭāhirah.*

The pure one.

I wonder what it takes... to be known, by a whole city, for having a clean heart.

Now Khadijah did not travel with her caravans herself. She would choose honest men to lead them, and share the profit with them.

And choosing the right person was everything. Because a caravan is full of treasure. And out in the desert, far from home, Khadijah could not watch over it herself.

One day, Khadijah heard about a young man in Makkah. People said he always told the truth. People said that if you left something with him, you would get back every last bit of it. People even had a name for him.

*Al-Amīn.* The trustworthy one.

His name was Muhammad ﷺ.

So Khadijah sent for him, and asked him to lead her caravan north, to the land of Sham, where Syria and its neighbours are today. And she offered him more than she usually gave other traders.

He agreed. And off he went, with her camels, and her goods, and her servant Maysarah beside him.

Can you hear the camel bells? Ringing softly... all the way across the sand... all the way north.

And when the caravan came home again, two things came with it.

The first was her trade, full of more blessing than she had ever seen before.

And the second was Maysarah... telling her about the journey, and everything he had seen of this young man.

And Khadijah listened. And she thought very carefully about everything she heard.

Many important men of Makkah had wanted to marry Khadijah. She had said no to all of them.

But what drew Khadijah was not riches, and not fame. It was his character. His honesty. His trustworthiness. A truly good heart.

So Khadijah did something brave. She sent a friend to ask him, gently, whether he would like to marry her.

And he said yes.

His uncles went to her family, and Khadijah and Muhammad ﷺ were married. And their house became a home full of light.

Allah gave them children there. Among them four daughters... Zaynab, and Ruqayyah, and Umm Kulthum, and Fatimah.

And the Prophet ﷺ loved Khadijah so much that, all the years she was alive, he never married anyone else. Years later he would say something beautiful about her.

"I was granted her love."

As the years went by, Muhammad ﷺ began to love being alone, to think, and to worship.

He would climb a mountain just outside Makkah, to a small cave called Hira. He would stay there for nights at a time, looking out over the valley, turning his heart to his Lord.

And when his food ran out, he would come home to Khadijah. And she would pack more for him. And he would go back up the mountain.

Until one night... in that cave... the angel Jibril, alayhis salam, came to him.

And he brought the very first words of the Qur'an.

*Iqraʾ bismi rabbika-lladhī khalaq.*

"Read... in the name of your Lord, who created."

Nothing like this had ever happened to him before. And so he came down the mountain in the dark, with his heart trembling, and came home. Home to the lamplight. Home to Khadijah.

"Cover me," he said. "Cover me."

And she did. She wrapped him up, warm and close, and stayed beside him until the fear had gone.

Can you feel how warm a blanket is, when someone you love wraps it round you? Heavy, and soft, and safe.

Then he told her everything. And he said, "I was afraid for myself."

And here it is. The moment from the very beginning. The words Khadijah said.

*Kallā wallāhi... mā yukhzīka-llāhu abadā.*

"Never. By Allah... Allah will never disgrace you."

"Because you are good to your family. You carry the load of the weak. You help people who have nothing. You welcome guests. And you stand by people when hard times come."

Do you see what she did? She did not tell him that nothing had happened. She reminded him who he was. She reminded him that Allah does not let down a person like that.

And then she took him to her old cousin, Waraqah ibn Nawfal, a man who had read the books that came before. And when Waraqah heard what had happened, he said that this was the very same angel Allah had sent to Prophet Musa, alayhis salam.

Soon after, the message began. Muhammad ﷺ was the Messenger of Allah. There is no god but Allah, and the statues cannot help anyone.

And who was the very first person in the whole world to believe him?

Khadijah.

Before anyone else. Before a single friend. Before a single neighbour. She believed him straight away, because she knew him. She had seen his honesty with her own eyes, for years and years.

And when the angel taught the Prophet ﷺ how to pray, he taught Khadijah. And she prayed with him. Some of the very first prayers of Islam.

But not everyone was happy. Many people in Makkah said unkind things. They called him a liar. They turned away from him.

And Khadijah stood beside him, through all of it. She gave her wealth to help. She gave her time, her comfort, her whole heart.

Even when hard years came, and his family and the people who stood with him were cut off by a boycott, and food became scarce, Khadijah stayed right beside him.

Years later, the Prophet ﷺ remembered it like this. "She believed in me when people did not believe. She believed me when people called me a liar. She helped me with her wealth when people kept theirs away."

And now... the most wonderful part.

One day, Khadijah was on her way to the Prophet ﷺ, carrying a dish of food for him.

And the angel Jibril came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: here is Khadijah, coming to you. When she reaches you... give her greetings of peace... from her Lord... and from me.

Salām. Peace. From Allah Himself.

And give her good news, Jibril said. A house in Jannah, made of hollow pearl... where there is no noise... and no tiredness.

No noise. No tiredness. Only peace.

A greeting of peace... from the Lord of all the worlds... sent to one woman, carrying a dish of food, on an ordinary day in Makkah.

The Prophet ﷺ also said that the best of the women of her time was Khadijah. And after Khadijah returned to Allah, he never forgot her. He spoke of her again and again. And for the rest of his life, he would send gifts to her old friends, just because they had been dear to her.

Do you remember that night at the beginning? The footsteps on the mountain path, and the trembling heart, and the lamp glowing in the window?

Now you know why he ran home to her. Because Khadijah was the one who could see the truth in people. And she saw it in him before anyone else did.

And now... slowly... the lamp in that little house grows soft and far away. We leave the quiet valley and the dark mountains behind... and travel back home. To right here. Right now.

But keep Khadijah with you. Because she teaches us something very precious.

When someone you love is scared, you can be their blanket. You can remind them of the good in them. You can stand beside them. That is one of the most beautiful things a person can ever do.

So let us end with a dua from the Qur'an, for people who believe, and stand beside the truth, the way Khadijah did. It means... Our Lord, we believe in what You sent down, and we follow the Messenger, so write us among those who bear witness. Say it with me... slowly...

*Rabbanā āmannā bimā anzalta wattabaʿna-r-rasūla faktubnā maʿa-sh-shāhidīn.*

The Caravan to the North7 min listen

Come with me. Today, we're going on a journey... far, far away... and long, long ago.

To a city in a valley, ringed by brown mountains, where the sun is bright and the air smells of spices and warm dust.

This is Makkah. And today the market is loud.

Listen. Traders calling out their prices. Camels grumbling as they kneel down. Sacks thumping onto the ground. And somewhere, very softly, a little bell. Ting... ting...

A camel bell. Keep listening for it. It will come back.

In a quiet room, away from the noise, a woman is thinking. Her name is Khadijah, radiyallahu anha.

Khadijah is a trader, one of the most respected in the whole city. Her caravans cross the desert to faraway markets, and come home again.

But Khadijah does not ride with them. She has to choose someone to lead them for her.

And that is the hard part.

Because a caravan is full of treasure. And out in the desert, weeks from home, Khadijah cannot watch over it herself. A dishonest man could take a little here, a little there, and she would never know.

So who do you trust, with everything you have?

Imagine holding something very precious in your hands, and having to give it to someone else to look after. Can you feel that little flutter in your tummy? That wondering. Will they be careful? Will they be honest?

Now, people in Makkah have been talking about a young man.

They say he never tells a lie. Not even a small one. They trust him so much that they have given him a name.

*Al-Amīn.*

The trustworthy one.

His name is Muhammad ﷺ. He will one day be the last Messenger of Allah. But right now, nobody knows that yet. They only know that he is honest.

And Khadijah hears about him. And she makes her choice.

She asks him to lead her caravan north, to the land of Sham, where Syria and its neighbours are today. She offers him more than she usually gives other traders. And she sends her servant, Maysarah, to travel beside him.

And off they go.

Can you hear it now? The camel bells. Ting... ting... A long, swaying line of camels, stepping slowly out of the valley, into the wide golden desert.

Let's breathe with the camels. Slow in... and slow out. Step... by step... by step.

The days pass. The markets of Sham are full of colour and noise. And Maysarah is there, beside him, the whole way.

And then... one day... far across the sand... the bells come home.

Khadijah looks at her trade. And she sees more blessing in it than she has ever seen before.

And then Maysarah comes to her, and tells her about the journey, and everything he saw of this young man.

And Khadijah listens, very carefully.

One day, the Prophet ﷺ would teach all of us where honesty leads. Listen...

*ʿAlaykum biṣ-ṣidq... fa-inna-ṣ-ṣidqa yahdī ila-l-birr... wa inna-l-birra yahdī ila-l-jannah.*

"Hold on to telling the truth. Because the truth leads to goodness. And goodness leads to Jannah."

Honesty is like a road. When you walk it, it takes you somewhere good. For that young man, it led all the way to the trust of a whole city... and to a woman who would soon change his whole life.

And you can walk that road too. Every time you tell the truth, even when it is hard... every time you give back something that belongs to someone else... you are walking the road of al-Amīn.

I wonder who trusts you like that.

And now... slowly... the camel bells ring one last time. Ting... ting... We leave the busy market of Makkah behind, and the long desert road... and we travel back. To right here. Right now.

So let us ask Allah for the kind of heart that people can trust. It means... O Allah, guide me to the very best character. Say it with me...

*Allāhumma-hdinī li-aḥsani-l-akhlāq.*

The Wise Choice7 min listen

Come with me. Today, we're going on a journey... far, far away... and long, long ago.

It is evening in Makkah. The sun has slipped behind the mountains, and the sky is turning deep blue. One by one, little lamps begin to glow in the windows of the houses.

Look at that window there. A small flame, gold and flickering, in a clay lamp. Hold on to that light. We will see it again.

Inside that house lives a woman named Khadijah, radiyallahu anha.

Everyone in Makkah knows her name. She comes from a noble family. She is wise, and generous, and her caravans travel all across the desert.

And she is known for something even more precious than all of that. In a city full of statues and unkind ways, Khadijah keeps her heart clean. The people of Makkah call her...

*Aṭ-Ṭāhirah.* The pure one.

Now, many important men of Makkah wanted to marry Khadijah. Rich men. Powerful men. Men with big houses and many camels.

And to every one of them... Khadijah said no.

Because Khadijah was not looking for gold. She had gold. She was looking for something much harder to find.

Then her caravan came home from the north. And her servant Maysarah told her about the young man who had led it. His name was Muhammad ﷺ. A man who never lied. Who never cheated. Who was gentle with everyone. The people of Makkah called him al-Amīn, the trustworthy one.

He was not the richest man in Makkah. Not even close.

But Khadijah had seen his heart.

Think about your own heart for a moment, beating steady and warm inside your chest. That is where the most important things about a person live. Not in their pockets. Not in their houses. Right there.

And Khadijah did something brave.

She sent a friend to him, to ask gently whether he would like to marry her.

I wonder what that moment was like... a quiet message, carried through the lamplit streets of Makkah.

And he said yes. He spoke to his uncles, and his family went to her family. And Khadijah and Muhammad ﷺ were married.

And that house, with the lamp in the window, became their home.

A home full of kindness. Full of quiet. Full of good things. Allah gave them children there. Among them, four daughters... Zaynab, and Ruqayyah, and Umm Kulthum, and Fatimah.

Can you picture them? Little voices in the courtyard. Bread warming. The lamp glowing as the evening comes.

And for all the years that Khadijah was alive, the Prophet ﷺ never married anyone else.

Years and years later, long after that first evening, the Prophet ﷺ spoke about her. And he said something so beautiful. Listen...

*Innī qad ruziqtu ḥubbahā.*

"I was granted her love."

A gift. Something Allah provided, like a treasure, kept safe in his heart.

Khadijah could have chosen gold. Instead she chose goodness. And the man she chose was the one Allah would choose as His Messenger.

You get to make choices like that too. Choosing a friend who is kind, even if they are not the most popular. Choosing to be the kind of person who is good all the way through.

I wonder what someone would see, if they looked right into your heart.

And now... slowly... the little lamp in the window grows soft and small... and the blue evening of Makkah fades away. We travel back, all the way home. To right here. Right now.

So let us ask Allah for a home like theirs. A home full of love and goodness. It means... Our Lord, give us, in our families and our children, the coolness of our eyes. Say it with me...

*Rabbanā hab lanā min azwājinā wa dhurriyyātinā qurrata aʿyun.*

Allah Will Never Disgrace You7 min listen

Come with me. Today, we're going on a journey... far, far away... and long, long ago.

To a valley between tall, dark mountains. The day is ending. The rocks are still warm from the sun, and the first stars are coming out, one... by one... by one.

Down in the valley is the city of Makkah. And in one small house, a lamp is burning.

Inside, in the lamplight, there is a thick, soft blanket. Wool, warm and heavy.

Remember that blanket. It is going to matter.

This is the home of Khadijah, radiyallahu anha. She is the wife of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

For a while now, her husband has been going up into the mountains. To a small cave called Hira, high above the city. He stays there for nights at a time, alone, worshipping, turning his heart to his Lord.

And when his food runs out, he comes home to Khadijah. And she packs more for him. And he goes back up the mountain.

But tonight... tonight is different.

Up in that cave, something has happened. Something that has never happened to anyone in all of Makkah. The angel Jibril, alayhis salam, has come. And he has brought the very first words of the Qur'an.

*Iqraʾ bismi rabbika-lladhī khalaq.*

"Read... in the name of your Lord, who created."

And now, listen. Footsteps on the mountain path. Quick footsteps, coming closer in the dark.

The door opens. And there he is. His heart is trembling.

"Cover me," he says. "Cover me."

And Khadijah does not ask a single question. Not yet. She picks up the blanket, and she wraps it around him. Warm, and close.

Can you feel it? The heavy, soft weight of a blanket settling round your shoulders. The warmth slowly spreading. Take a slow breath in... and let it out... like the fear draining away.

She stays beside him. And she waits. Until the fear has gone.

Then he tells her everything that happened in the cave. And he says, "I was afraid for myself."

Now, Khadijah has to choose her words. What do you say, to someone you love, when they are frightened?

And here is what she said.

*Kallā wallāhi... mā yukhzīka-llāhu abadā.*

"Never. By Allah... Allah will never disgrace you."

And then she told him why.

"You are good to your family. You carry the load of people who are weak. You help people who have nothing. You welcome guests into your home. And you stand by people when hard times come."

Do you see what Khadijah did? She did not say, it was nothing. She did not say, forget about it. She reminded him who he was. She held up all the good he had ever done, like a lamp, so he could see it.

And then she took him to her old cousin, Waraqah, a man who had read the books that came before. And Waraqah told them that this was the very same angel Allah had sent to Prophet Musa, alayhis salam.

The Prophet ﷺ came down that mountain trembling. And the first person in the world he ran to... was Khadijah.

One day, someone you love might be scared too. A friend. A little brother or sister. Even your mum or dad.

And you can be like Khadijah. You can be their blanket. You can stay close. And you can remind them of the good in them.

I wonder whose blanket you will be.

And now... slowly... we fold the warm blanket away. We leave the little lamplit house, and the dark mountain, and the stars over Makkah... and we travel back home. To right here. Right now.

And whenever worry comes, we can take it to Allah. It means... O Allah, I seek Your protection from worry and from sadness. Say it with me...

Come with me. Today, we're going on a journey... far, far away... and long, long ago.

It is very early. So early that the sky over Makkah is still dark blue, and the whole city is asleep.

But look, over there. Behind the mountains. A thin, pale line of light, just beginning.

The very first light of the morning. Nobody else has noticed it yet. But it is there. And it is growing.

Hold that light in your mind. We will come back to it.

In a quiet house, a woman is awake. Her name is Khadijah, radiyallahu anha, the wife of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Something enormous has just begun in her home. Her husband has come down from the cave of Hira, where the angel Jibril, alayhis salam, brought him the first words of the Qur'an.

And now the message is clear. Muhammad ﷺ is the Messenger of Allah. There is no god but Allah. The statues around the Kaaba cannot hear, and cannot help anyone.

It is the most important message in the world. But right now... in this whole sleeping city... who will believe it?

Khadijah does.

Before any friend. Before any neighbour. Before anyone at all. She is the very first person in the whole world to believe in him.

Why was she so sure? Because she knew him. She had watched him for years. His honesty with her caravans. His kindness in their home. She had never once heard him tell a lie. So when he said, this message is from Allah... she knew it was true.

Can you feel what it is like to trust someone completely? A warm, steady feeling, right in the middle of your chest. No wobbling. No doubt. Just sure.

And then something beautiful happens. The angel teaches the Prophet ﷺ how to make wudu, and how to pray. And the Prophet ﷺ comes home and teaches Khadijah.

Imagine the cool water on their hands and faces. And then, two people, praying together... to Allah. Some of the very first prayers of Islam.

Let's be still with them for a moment. Breathe in slowly... and breathe out.

But the days that came next were not easy.

Many people in Makkah did not want to hear the message. They said unkind things. They laughed. They called the Prophet ﷺ a liar, the very same man they used to call al-Amīn.

And Khadijah stood beside him. Every single day. She gave her wealth to help. She gave her comfort, her time, her whole heart. Even in the hardest years, when his family and the people who stood with him were cut off by a boycott, and food became scarce, she stayed right there, beside him.

Years later, the Prophet ﷺ remembered it. And he said...

*Āmanat bī idh kafara bī an-nās.*

"She believed in me... when people did not believe."

"She believed me when people called me a liar. And she helped me with her wealth, when people kept theirs away."

Do you remember that thin line of light, over the mountains? Nobody noticed it at first. But it kept growing, and growing, until it filled the whole sky.

That is what Khadijah's faith was like. It started in one quiet house. And today, that same light has reached people all over the world. All the way... to you.

Sometimes, doing what is right means being the first. Standing up for the truth before anyone else does. And that takes a quiet kind of courage.

I wonder where you might be the first to do something good.

And now... slowly... the morning light spreads across Makkah, and the city begins to wake. We leave that small house behind... and travel back home. To right here. Right now.

So let us say the words of people who heard the call to believe, and answered it, the way Khadijah did. It means... Our Lord, we heard someone calling us to faith, saying, believe in your Lord... and so we believed. Say it with me...

*Rabbanā innanā samiʿnā munādiyan yunādī li-l-īmān... an āminū bi-rabbikum fa-āmannā.*

A Salaam from Allah7 min listen

Come with me. Today, we're going on a journey... far, far away... and long, long ago.

It is an ordinary day in Makkah. Warm sun on the walls. A soft breeze coming down from the mountains.

The streets are busy. Someone is calling out. A camel is grumbling. Children are running past. Noise, and noise, and more noise.

Now listen to that noise. And then, slowly, imagine it fading away. Softer... and softer... and softer. Until there is only quiet.

Remember that quiet. It is the secret of this story.

Walking through those busy streets is a woman named Khadijah, radiyallahu anha. She is carrying a dish in her hands. Food, for her husband, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Nothing special. Just a dish of food. The kind of thing she has done so many times before.

Can you picture her careful steps, holding that dish steady, so nothing spills?

Khadijah has been beside the Prophet ﷺ through everything. She was the first to believe in him. She comforted him the night he came down from the mountain, trembling. She gave her wealth. She stood by him when people laughed, and when people were unkind.

But on this ordinary day... while she is still walking... something extraordinary happens.

The angel Jibril, alayhis salam, comes to the Prophet ﷺ. And he says...

Here is Khadijah, coming to you, with a dish of food.

When she reaches you... give her greetings of peace... from her Lord... and from me.

Salām. Peace. From Allah Himself. The Lord of all the worlds. The One who made the stars and the seas and every grain of sand. Sending peace... to Khadijah.

Feel how big that is. Let it settle slowly inside you. Breathe in... and breathe out.

And Jibril said one more thing. Give her good news.

*Bashshirhā bi-baytin fi-l-jannati min qaṣab... lā ṣakhaba fīhi wa lā naṣab.*

"Give her the good news of a house in Jannah, made of hollow pearl... where there is no noise... and no tiredness."

No noise. Do you remember the busy streets? All that shouting and grumbling and rushing? In Khadijah's house in Jannah, none of it. Only quiet.

And no tiredness. After all those years of hard days, of carrying and giving and standing firm... a home where no one ever gets tired.

A house made of pearl. Smooth, and glowing, and soft with light.

It is said that when Khadijah heard the greeting, she answered with beautiful manners. She said that Allah Himself is as-Salām, the Source of all peace. And she sent peace back to Jibril, and to the Prophet ﷺ.

The Prophet ﷺ also told us that the best of the women of her time was Khadijah.

And think about this. It happened on an ordinary day. While she was doing an ordinary, kind thing. Carrying a dish of food, for someone she loved.

The small, kind things you do... bringing someone a drink... helping without being asked... they are never too small for Allah to see.

I wonder what small, kind thing you might carry to someone.

And now... slowly... the streets of Makkah grow quiet. The noise fades... softer... and softer. And we travel back, all the way home, wrapped in that quiet. To right here. Right now.

So let us end with a dua about peace. The Prophet ﷺ used to say it after every prayer. It means... O Allah, You are Peace, and from You comes peace. Blessed are You, Owner of majesty and honour. Say it with me...

*Allāhumma anta-s-salām wa minka-s-salām, tabārakta yā dha-l-jalāli wa-l-ikrām.*
