What Sukun Kids is, and how the stories are made
Sukun Kids is an iOS app of narrated Islamic stories for Muslim children ages 3 and up: the prophets, the companions of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and the great women of Islam, told as immersive audio adventures a child can listen to or read along with. Every story is drawn from the Qur'an and classical Sunni tafsir and cites its ayah. The library currently holds 115 stories across 19 figures, and it grows every few weeks.
Who makes it
Sukun Kids is built by a small independent team, not a media company. It started from a simple observation: Muslim children can name every superhero on television and often none of the prophets. The app exists to give them real heroes, people who actually lived, in a form a five-year-old will ask to hear again. Sukun (سُكُون) means stillness.
How every story is sourced
- The Qur'an first. Where the Qur'an tells a story, the script follows the Qur'an's own sequence and wording, and each story names the surah and ayat it draws from.
- Classical Sunni tafsir second. Details beyond the Qur'anic text come from Ibn Kathir's Stories of the Prophets and Ma'ariful Qur'an, and, for the companions, from the seerah and authenticated hadith. Weak or disputed reports are left out.
- Reverence rules. No faces of the prophets are ever depicted; the art shows the scenes and worlds of the stories. Angels are shown only as light. Prophets are never portrayed as sinning.
- Reviewed before it ships. Every script is checked line by line against its sources for creed (aqeedah) and accuracy before it is narrated. When a reader flags an error, we correct the story and republish it.
What the app is, plainly
- Audio-first. Narrated stories with gentle soundscapes and a sleep timer, for any calm moment of the day, bedtime included. Older children can read along with the text.
- Free to start. The complete story of Prophet Yusuf, peace be upon him, and all of his short tales are free forever. A subscription unlocks the rest of the library.
- Built for children. Sukun Kids is in Apple's Kids Category: no ads, no third-party tracking, and a parental gate on purchases and outside links.
- A nightly quiz. Five narrated questions a night, so parents can watch their child's knowledge of the prophets and of values like patience and honesty grow.
