Prophet Ayyub (Job), peace be upon him, was a prophet of Allah remembered above all for his patience. Blessed with wealth, health, and a large family, he lost them all and endured a long illness, yet never stopped trusting and thanking Allah. When he called out, “Hardship has touched me, and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful” (al-Anbiya 21:83), Allah healed him through a spring and restored his family and more.

“Hardship has touched me, and You are the Most Merciful of all who show mercy.”
Who was Prophet Ayyub?
Prophet Ayyub, peace be upon him, lived in a green farming land that Ibn Kathir places in the region of Syria. Allah had blessed him with fields, orchards, flocks, good health, and a big family, and he never forgot who had given it all. He thanked Allah morning and evening, fed the poor, and helped the weak. Then a trial came that the Qur'an records (Sad 38:41). His harvests and flocks were lost, his children were taken back to Allah, and he said the words the Qur'an teaches at every loss: “We belong to Allah, and to Him we return” (al-Baqarah 2:156). Last came a long illness that drained his strength for years.
His friends stopped visiting, and only his faithful wife stayed to care for him. Yet Ibn Kathir relates that two things the sickness never touched: his heart, which never stopped trusting Allah, and his tongue, which never stopped thanking Him. At last he called out, without complaint or demand, “Hardship has touched me, and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful” (al-Anbiya 21:83). Allah answered: “Strike the ground with your foot; here is cool water to wash in and to drink” (Sad 38:42). A spring burst from the dry earth. He washed, and drank, and Allah removed the illness completely.
While he washed, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ tells us that gold fell on him like locusts, and as he gathered it Allah asked, “Have I not given you enough?” He answered, “Yes, my Lord, but I can never have enough of Your blessing” (Bukhari). Then Allah gave him back his family and as much again with them, “a mercy from Us and a reminder for the worshippers” (al-Anbiya 21:84; Sad 38:43). His story closes with the words every heart longs to hear: “Truly We found him patient. What an excellent servant, always turning back to Allah” (Sad 38:44).

Come with me. Today, we're going on a journey... far, far away... and long, long ago.
But wait. Before this story can truly begin... there is something you have to hear. Just one small sound. Listen with your whole heart.
It is the middle of the night, in a small, worn-out house. Inside, a man lies very still. He is too weak to stand. His body aches from his head to his feet. Everything he ever had... is gone.
And in the darkness... he is whispering something. Lean closer. Can you hear it?
"Alhamdulillah... all praise belongs to Allah."
Thank You? He has lost everything... he has been ill for years... and the words on his lips... are THANK YOU?
How? How can a heart do that? And what will happen to him... will he be alright?
Tuck those questions away somewhere warm... like a little bird in your cupped hands. Because to understand that whisper... we have to wind the years all the way back... to a time when this same house rang with laughter.
We're in a wide green farming land, far to the north of the great deserts... the land we now call Syria. And here we are... standing between fields of golden wheat that roll away like a sea. Feel the warm sun on your face. Smell the orchard fruit on the breeze... figs, and olives, and sweet ripe grapes. Hear the doves calling... the wind swishing through the wheat... children laughing somewhere behind the trees.
All of this belonged to a man named Prophet Ayyub, alayhi salaam.
Allah had blessed Prophet Ayyub with so many wonderful gifts. Fields heavy with wheat. Orchards heavy with fruit. Flocks and herds spreading over the hills. A strong, healthy body. And best of all... a big, beautiful family filling his home with noise and joy.
But do you know what made Prophet Ayyub truly special? Not the fields. Not the flocks. It was this: he never, ever forgot Who had given it all to him.
Every morning, his first whisper was thank You. Every evening, his last whisper was thank You. Alhamdulillah... alhamdulillah... like a soft song that never stopped playing in his heart. He was kind to the poor. He shared his food. He helped the weak. And the more Allah gave him... the more humble and thankful he became.
Remember that whisper. The whole of this story flows out of it... and back to it.
Now... Allah sometimes chooses His greatest servants for His greatest tests. The prophets were tested hardest of all... and then those most like them. It is like a teacher saving the hardest questions for the very best student... not because the teacher wants them to fail... but because the teacher knows they can grow through them. And the test that came to Prophet Ayyub was one of the greatest tests any person has ever been given.
It began in the fields. One hard season, the harvest was lost. Then the flocks were lost too. The barns stood empty. Little by little, everything Prophet Ayyub owned slipped away... like water through fingers.
And what did he whisper? "Alhamdulillah. Allah gave it... and Allah may take it back. All praise belongs to Allah."
Then came the hardest day of all... the day his dear children were taken back to Allah.
Oh, how that hurt. Even a prophet's heart can ache... and this ache was too big for words. But even then... even then... Prophet Ayyub said the words Allah teaches all of us to say when we lose something we love: "We belong to Allah... and to Him we are returning."
And last of all... the sickness came. A long, heavy sickness that settled deep into his body. His strength melted away. His skin ached. His bones grew tired. Days became months... months became years... and still he lay ill.
His friends stopped coming. The visitors disappeared. The house grew quiet... so quiet you could hear the wind in the empty fields. In the end, only one person stayed by his side... his kind and faithful wife. She cooked for him, and cared for him, and never once left him. What a heart SHE had... gentle and strong at the same time.
But here is the secret the sources tell us. In all those long years of sickness... two things were never touched. Two things stayed as strong as ever.
His heart. And his tongue.
His heart never stopped trusting Allah. And his tongue never stopped thanking Him.
And there it is... the moment I showed you at the very beginning. Do you remember? The dark room... the worn-out house... the whisper. "Alhamdulillah."
Now you know how a heart can do that. Prophet Ayyub's thank-you had never depended on the fields, or the flocks, or even on feeling well. He thanked Allah in the years of plenty and in the years of hardship. His heart truly ached... he missed the ones he loved... and still, he never stopped trusting and thanking Allah. That is what patience really is.
But you asked another question too. Will he be alright?
What happened next... is one of the most beautiful answers in the whole Qur'an.
One day, after years upon years of patience, Prophet Ayyub turned to his Lord. He didn't shout. He didn't say "why me?" He didn't even ask for anything... not in so many words. He simply called out, soft and honest:
*Annī massaniya-ḍ-ḍurru... wa anta arḥamur-rāḥimīn.*
"Hardship has touched me... and You are the Most Merciful of all who show mercy."
Do you notice what he did? He told Allah what hurt... and then he simply praised Him. That was all. The politest, humblest dua... from the politest, humblest heart.
And Allah answered him.
The Qur'an tells us Allah's command: "Strike the ground with your foot."
So Prophet Ayyub gathered his strength... lifted his tired foot... and stamped it down on the dry earth.
And deep, deep under the dry ground... something began to move. Something began to rise.
Up from the earth burst a spring. Cool, clear, sparkling water... bubbling and shining... catching the light... spreading into a pool right at his feet.
"Here is cool water," Allah told him, "to wash in... and to drink."
Prophet Ayyub washed in that spring... and as the cool water ran over him, Allah made the sickness leave him... off his skin, out of his bones... washing away like years of dust. Then he drank... and Allah cured the illness deep inside him... completely... until not one ache was left. He stood up straight... strong, and healthy, and completely well... as if the long sickness had been nothing but a dream.
Take a slow, cool breath... like morning air over new water. He was alright. He was more than alright.
And Allah wasn't finished.
While Prophet Ayyub was washing, something wonderful happened... a story our Prophet Muhammad, ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam, himself told. Gold began to fall on him from the sky... tiny golden pieces, like little golden grasshoppers, sparkling down all around him. And Prophet Ayyub began scooping them up into his clothes... handful after eager handful.
Allah called to him: "O Ayyub... have I not given you enough?"
And Prophet Ayyub answered with words the world has never forgotten: "Yes, my Lord... but I can never have enough of Your blessing."
Still thankful. Always thankful. In the hard years, and now in a golden rain... the same whispering heart. Alhamdulillah.
And then Allah gave back everything the test had taken... and more. The Qur'an says Allah gave him his family, and as much again with them... "a mercy from Us, and a reminder for all who worship Allah." His home filled up once more with running feet and laughing voices. The fields grew golden again. The flocks came back to the hills. And at the center of it all stood Prophet Ayyub... whispering the same words he had whispered in the dark.
And Allah honored him with one more beautiful gift. A medal... not of gold, but of words... written in the Qur'an until the end of time:
*Innā wajadnāhu ṣābirā... niʿma l-ʿabd... innahū awwāb.*
"Truly We found him patient. What an excellent servant... always turning back to Allah."
So... what should we carry home from the story of the most patient man?
This. Patience is not just waiting. Anyone can wait with a grumpy heart. Prophet Ayyub's patience was waiting while still trusting... still thanking... still being gentle and kind. His thank-you didn't depend on easy days. And the Qur'an promises us: Allah loves the patient ones... and He never, ever forgets them. Allah always brings good to the patient... in this life, or in the next... even when we cannot yet see how.
So when your own hard day comes... when you're sick in bed, or something you love is lost, or the waiting feels too long... remember the whisper in the dark. Tell Allah what hurts. Praise Him anyway. And trust that Allah is preparing good for you... in His own way... at His own time.
I wonder which little hardship in your life... is quietly waiting to become... your own story of patience.
And now... slowly... we leave the green fields and the singing spring behind... the dove-song fading, the golden light softening... as we travel back home. To right here. Right now.
And we can end with Prophet Ayyub's own dua... the whisper that opened the door to all that mercy. It means... hardship has touched me... and You are the Most Merciful of all who show mercy. Say it with me... slowly... like a secret between you and Allah...
*Annī massaniya-ḍ-ḍurru... wa anta arḥamur-rāḥimīn.*

Come with me. Today, we're going on a journey... far, far away... and long, long ago.
We're going to a quiet village at night... in a green farming land, far to the north... the land we now call Syria.
Step softly. The village is fast asleep. The air is cool, and the sky is crowded with stars. Every house is dark... except one.
There. At the edge of the village... a small house with one small window... glowing.
Come closer. On the windowsill sits a little clay lamp, with a little golden flame. Watch it for a moment. When the night wind slips past... the flame bends, and shivers, and almost lies down. But it does not go out. It rises... and stands up straight again.
Remember that little flame. This story belongs to it.
Inside this house lives a man named Prophet Ayyub, alayhi salaam.
Long ago, Allah had blessed Prophet Ayyub with so many wonderful gifts. Fields of golden wheat. Orchards full of fruit. Flocks on the hills. A big, happy family. And through all of it, every single day... he thanked Allah.
But then Allah tested him... the way Allah tests His greatest servants. Little by little, everything he had was taken away. The fields. The flocks. Even the people he loved most.
And then came a long, long sickness. His strength melted away. His arms ached. His bones felt heavy as stones. He had been ill for so long... he could hardly remember what it felt like to run.
Can you feel how quiet this house is? How slow and careful everything has become?
Friends stopped visiting. Only his kind, faithful wife stayed... cooking, and carrying, and caring for him... through it all.
But listen. In all those years, the sickness never touched two things. His heart... and his tongue.
His heart stayed soft, and full of trust. And his tongue kept remembering Allah. Thanking Him in the morning. Thanking Him at night. A tiny flame... that would not go out.
Take one slow, soft breath... the way the little flame steadies itself after the wind.
And on this quiet night... Prophet Ayyub turned to Allah. He didn't shout. He didn't complain and complain. He didn't even ask for anything. He simply whispered the truth... to the One who always hears.
*Annī massaniya-ḍ-ḍurru... wa anta arḥamur-rāḥimīn.*
"Hardship has touched me... and You... You are the Most Merciful of all who show mercy."
That was the whole dua. He told Allah what hurt. And then he said what he knew best of all... that Allah's mercy is bigger than anything.
And Allah heard him. Allah had heard him all along... every whisper, every thank you, every quiet night. And from the very moment that dua left his lips... help was already on its way. Wonderful, sparkling, surprising help. But that morning... deserves a story all of its own.
Here is what this night whispers to us. Some duas are loud... and some are tiny. But Allah hears the quiet word just as clearly as the loud one. When you are hurting... when you are tired of waiting... you don't need fancy words. Just tell Allah what hurts... and remember how merciful He is.
I wonder how many quiet whispers... Allah is listening to... right now, all over the world.
And now... softly... we tiptoe away from the little house... past the little lamp, still burning bravely on its windowsill... out under the stars... and home. To right here. Right now.
And we can carry Prophet Ayyub's own whisper with us. It means... hardship has touched me... and You are the Most Merciful of all who show mercy. Say it slowly... like a secret between you and Allah...
*Annī massaniya-ḍ-ḍurru... wa anta arḥamur-rāḥimīn.*
The Spring at His Feet7 min listen

Come with me. Today, we're going on a journey... far, far away... and long, long ago.
We're going to a dry, dusty hillside... in the first pale light of morning... just before the sun comes up.
And here we are. Feel the ground under your feet. Dry... and cracked... and thirsty. Dust puffs up, soft and gray, with every step you take. It has not rained here for a long, long time.
Everything here is waiting for water. So keep one little word safe in your pocket... *cool*. We will need it soon.
Now look. Standing on this hillside, thin and tired... is a man with the most patient heart in all the world. Prophet Ayyub, alayhi salaam.
Prophet Ayyub had been ill for years and years. His fields were gone. His flocks were gone. His strength was gone. But his trust in Allah... never went anywhere.
Through every hard day, he kept thanking Allah. And one quiet night, he whispered the gentlest dua... "Hardship has touched me... and You are the Most Merciful of all who show mercy."
And Allah heard him.
This morning... this dry, dusty morning... is the morning the answer comes.
Listen. Allah sent Prophet Ayyub a command... and the Qur'an tells us exactly what it was:
*Urkuḍ bi-rijlik.*
"Strike the ground... with your foot."
What a surprising thing to say to a tired, aching man. Not "walk to the far river." Not "climb the high mountain." Just... stamp your foot. Right there. Right where you are.
So Prophet Ayyub lifted his tired foot... and stamped it down on the dry, cracked earth.
Shhh. Listen. Can you hear it? Deep, deep under the ground... something is moving. Something is rising. Something... cool.
And then... whoosh. Up through the dust burst a spring of water. Clear, clean, sparkling water... bubbling up and up, catching the morning light... spreading into a cool, shining pool at his feet.
"Here is cool water," Allah told him... "to wash in... and to drink."
Prophet Ayyub stepped into the pool and washed. And as the cool water ran over him... Allah made the sickness leave him. Off his skin. Out of his bones. Years and years of aching... washing away like dust.
Then he drank. Cool, sweet water, all the way down. And Allah cured the tiredness deep inside him... completely... until it was gone.
He stood up straight. Strong again. Well again. Can you imagine how the morning air felt to him... after all that waiting?
Feel it with him for a moment. Cool water on tired feet. Isn't that the softest kind of wonderful?
Here is the secret this morning teaches. Prophet Ayyub was patient for years... and then Allah's help came all at once, quicker than a heartbeat. And it didn't come from far away. It came from right under his feet... from the last place anyone would think to look.
So when you have been waiting... and waiting... and it feels like nothing is changing... remember the dry hillside. Allah's help can be closer than you think.
I wonder what surprising places... Allah's kindness might be hiding in... all around us.
And now... gently... we leave the shining new spring behind... the sound of the water growing softer... and softer... as we travel back home. To right here. Right now.
And we can end with the dua our Prophet Muhammad, ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam, loved to say for anyone who was unwell. It means... take away the hurt, Lord of all people... and heal, for You are the Healer... there is no healing but Yours... a healing that leaves no sickness behind. Say it with me, nice and slow...
*Adhhibi l-baʾsa Rabba n-nās... ishfi anta sh-Shāfī... lā shifāʾa illā shifāʾuk... shifāʾan lā yughādiru saqamā.*
The Golden Rain6 min listen

Come with me. Today, we're going on a journey... far, far away... and long, long ago.
We're going to a bright, bubbling spring on a green hillside... on one of the happiest mornings that hillside has ever seen.
And here we are. The sun is up, the air is washed and clean, and the spring sparkles like a pool of light. Listen to it bubbling... soft and busy and glad. Little golden glints dance on the water. Try to catch one with your eyes... there... and there.
Hold on to that golden sparkle. It is about to fill this whole story.
Do you know whose spring this is? Allah made it burst right out of the dry ground... for a man who had been patient longer than almost anyone. Prophet Ayyub, alayhi salaam.
For years and years, Prophet Ayyub was terribly ill. He lost his fields, his flocks, his strength... and through all of it, he never stopped thanking Allah. Then Allah healed him in this very water... and made him strong and well again.
And that is where our moment begins. Prophet Ayyub is washing in the cool spring... breathing the clean morning air... feeling brand new.
When suddenly... something begins to fall from the sky.
Not rain. Look closer.
Gold.
Tiny, glittering golden things... like little golden grasshoppers... falling softly all around him... plink... plink... splashing into the water, landing on the grass, catching the sun like sparks.
A rain of gold... just for him.
And what did Prophet Ayyub do? He began to gather them up in his clothes. Handful... after handful... after eager handful.
Can you imagine it? Scooping up handfuls of falling gold... with the morning sun on your shoulders?
And then... Allah called to him. "O Ayyub... have I not given you enough?"
Prophet Ayyub stopped. And he gave an answer so beautiful... it has been remembered ever since.
"Yes, my Lord," he said. "But I can never have enough... of Your blessing."
Do you hear what he meant? He wasn't being greedy. Every golden piece was a gift from Allah... and Prophet Ayyub loved the Giver even more than the gift. Welcoming Allah's gifts with a wide-open, thankful heart... is its own way of loving Allah.
And the Qur'an tells us Allah's own promise about thankfulness. Listen...
*La-in shakartum... la-azīdannakum.*
"If you are thankful... I will surely give you more."
Prophet Ayyub thanked Allah in the hard years... and he thanked Allah in the golden morning. His thank-you never depended on what he had. And Allah gave him more... and more.
So when something wonderful comes to you... a gift, a sunny day, your favorite food, a hug... enjoy it with your whole heart. And let your heart whisper: this came from Allah. Alhamdulillah.
I wonder how many golden little blessings... fell quietly into your day today... waiting to be noticed.
And now... slowly... we leave the sparkling spring and the golden morning behind... the glints fading gently from the water... as we travel back home. To right here. Right now.
And we can end with a thank-you our Prophet Muhammad, ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam, taught us to say when something makes us glad. It means... all praise belongs to Allah... by whose blessing all good things are completed. Say it with me...
*Alḥamdu lillāhi lladhī bi-niʿmatihī... tatimmu ṣ-ṣāliḥāt.*

Come with me. Today, we're going on a journey... far, far away... and long, long ago.
We're going to stand outside a small stone house... in a green farming land... at the very end of night... in those hushed, gray-blue minutes just before sunrise.
Here we are. Feel the cool, still air on your cheeks. A last star is fading above the roof. And over the far hills, the sky is turning... slowly... from gray... to gold.
Watch that morning light. In this story... the light is the whole story.
This little house belongs to Prophet Ayyub, alayhi salaam... the most patient man who ever lived.
For years and years, this house was quiet. Prophet Ayyub was terribly ill. Everything he had was taken away... his farms, his flocks... even his dear family. Almost everyone stopped visiting. For years, the only sounds here were slow footsteps... and soft, patient whispers of thanks to Allah.
But Prophet Ayyub whispered his gentle dua... and Allah heard him... and healed him in a cool, bubbling spring... and made him strong and well again.
And now... watch the light come.
Because when Allah gave back to Prophet Ayyub... He gave back more than the test had ever taken.
The Qur'an tells us what Allah did. Allah gave Prophet Ayyub his family... and as much again with them. A house that had been empty and quiet for years... filled up... with family.
Can you hear the difference? Where there were slow footsteps... now there are running ones, pattering across the floor. Where the rooms were silent... now there are voices calling good morning... and laughter tumbling out of the windows... and the smell of warm bread drifting through the door.
The sun lifts over the hills... and golden light spills across the fields... and the fields are green again... and the house is full again... and Prophet Ayyub stands in his doorway, his heart overflowing... saying the words he never once stopped saying. Alhamdulillah.
And why did Allah give him all of this? The Qur'an tells us... listen...
*Raḥmatan min ʿindinā... wa dhikrā lil-ʿābidīn.*
"A mercy from Us... and a reminder... for all who worship Allah."
A reminder. That means this morning was a gift for you, too. A reminder you can keep in your pocket forever: Allah never forgets the patient. However long the night... Allah's mercy always comes... in this life, or in the next... in ways we cannot always see.
And then Allah said something about Prophet Ayyub... the kind of words every heart longs to hear:
*Innā wajadnāhu ṣābirā... niʿma l-ʿabd... innahū awwāb.*
"Truly We found him patient. What an excellent servant... always turning back to Allah."
So when your own waiting feels long... when you are sad, or sick, or missing something you lost... remember this little stone house. The Qur'an says Allah loves the patient ones. Stay gentle. Stay thankful. And keep your hope in Allah... always.
I wonder what beautiful mornings... Allah is quietly preparing... for the patient hearts of this world.
And now... softly... we slip away from the full, happy house... down the gold-lit path between the green fields... and all the way back home. To right here. Right now.
And we can end with a dua for the moments when we need Allah's mercy most. It means... O Ever-Living One... O One who keeps all things in His care... by Your mercy I ask for help. Say it with me, slowly...
*Yā Ḥayyu yā Qayyūm... bi-raḥmatika astaghīth.*

Questions about Prophet Ayyub
Who was Prophet Ayyub?+
Ayyub (Job), peace be upon him, was a prophet of Allah known for extraordinary patience. He lost his wealth, his children, and his health, kept trusting and thanking Allah throughout, and was healed and restored by Allah. His story is told in Surah al-Anbiya 21:83-84 and Surah Sad 38:41-44.
Is Prophet Ayyub mentioned in the Quran?+
Yes. His dua and Allah's answer are in Surah al-Anbiya 21:83-84, and Surah Sad 38:41-44 records the spring at his feet, the return of his family, and Allah's praise of him as patient. He is also named among the prophets in an-Nisa 4:163 and al-An'am 6:84.
What is the dua of Prophet Ayyub?+
“Anni massaniya-d-durru wa anta arhamur-rahimin”: “Hardship has touched me, and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful” (al-Anbiya 21:83). He simply told Allah what hurt and praised His mercy, and Allah answered him. Muslims still say it in illness and difficulty.
How did Prophet Ayyub get sick, and how was he cured?+
The Qur'an does not detail the cause; the illness was a trial from Allah that followed the loss of his wealth and children (Sad 38:41). Allah cured him by commanding, “Strike the ground with your foot,” and a spring appeared for him to wash in and drink from (Sad 38:42).
What can children learn from Prophet Ayyub?+
That patience means waiting while still trusting and thanking Allah, not waiting with a grumpy heart; that you can tell Allah exactly what hurts; and that Allah never forgets the patient, whose reward comes in this life or the next.
What is the lesson of Prophet Ayyub's story?+
That patience is not the same as silence. Ayyub told Allah plainly that hardship had touched him and asked for mercy, and Allah answered him and still described him as patient and an excellent servant.
How do I teach my child to be patient in Islam?+
Give them the distinction Ayyub's story makes: they are allowed to say that something is hard and to ask Allah for help, and patience is that they keep turning to Allah while it lasts. Telling a child that patience means not complaining usually just teaches them to hide it.
What was Prophet Ayyub's dua?+
Anni massaniya-d-durru wa anta arhamur-rahimin: indeed, adversity has touched me, and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful. It is in Surah Al-Anbiya, verse 83.
