The Teacher

Aishaعائشة

Aisha bint Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with her, was the daughter of Abu Bakr as-Siddiq, a wife of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and one of the Mothers of the Believers (al-Ahzab 33:6). Curious, quick, and gifted with a remarkable memory, she became one of the greatest scholars of Islam: after the Prophet's ﷺ passing, the companions themselves came to her to learn, and a great share of his teachings reaches us through her.

Aisha: a short story summary

Also written: Aisha bint Abi Bakr, Aishah, Ayesha, A'isha

Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, grew up in Makkah as the daughter of Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, the closest friend of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. From childhood she was full of questions and loved learning more than anything. Allah blessed her to live in the household of the Prophet ﷺ as one of the Mothers of the Believers (al-Ahzab 33:6), and she wasted none of it. She watched how he prayed, how he treated children and the poor, and how he mended his own sandals, and she was never shy to ask when she did not understand. The Qur'an says Allah raises those given knowledge in rank (al-Mujadila 58:11).

The hadith collections show a home full of warmth. On a journey the Prophet ﷺ raced Aisha across the sand and she won; years later they raced again, he won, and he said, “This one makes up for that one” (Abu Dawud). He smiled at the toy horse with two wings among her playthings and laughed when she reminded him that Prophet Sulayman, peace be upon him, had winged horses (Abu Dawud). The household lived simply, yet when a sheep was given to them she gave nearly all of it away. Told only the shoulder remained, the Prophet ﷺ said, “All of it remains except the shoulder” (Tirmidhi): what is given for Allah is what truly lasts.

After the Prophet ﷺ returned to his Lord, the teachings he left did not vanish, because Aisha had kept them. The great companions came to sit before her and learn, and when a hard question arose they would say, “Let us ask Aisha” (Tirmidhi). Asked what the Prophet ﷺ was truly like, she gave the answer Muslims still repeat: “His character was the Qur'an” (Muslim). She taught, her students taught others, and that chain of knowledge continues to this day. The Qur'an asks whether those who know and those who do not can ever be equal (az-Zumar 39:9); Aisha's life is the answer.

Come with me. Today, we're going on a journey... far, far away... and long, long ago.

We're going to a city called Madinah. A place of soft clay houses and swaying date palms... where warm little lamps glow gold in every window.

And here we are. Walking its quiet streets... under a wide sky full of stars.

That warm golden light... will stay with us... all through the story.

Because here, long ago, lived a young girl who loved to learn... more than anything in the whole world. A girl so clever, and so full of questions, that one day she would teach the greatest teachers of all. Her name... was Aisha, radiyallahu anha.

Her father was Abu Bakr, radiyallahu anhu. The closest, dearest friend of the Prophet Muhammad, ﷺ. A gentle man... with a soft heart and a quiet voice.

And his daughter Aisha... oh, she was clever. So very, very clever. And curious... about absolutely everything.

She had a question for every little thing in the world. Why is the sky so wide? How do the birds know the way? What does that word mean... and why... and how?

Some children chase after toys. But Aisha... chased after knowledge. To her, learning something new... was the most wonderful feeling in all the world. Like a little lamp... lighting up... right inside her chest.

And Allah blessed this curious girl with the most wonderful gift of all. For she came to live... in the home of the Prophet Muhammad, ﷺ, himself. As one of the Mothers of the Believers.

Now imagine that. To live right beside the kindest, wisest teacher who ever walked upon the earth. And to learn from him... every single day.

And Aisha did not waste a moment of it. Every gentle word he spoke, she listened to. The way he prayed, so softly. The way he smiled at children. The way he was kind to the poor... and patient with everyone. She watched it all... and deep inside her clever mind... she remembered.

Now... the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ loved Aisha dearly. And he was gentle and playful with her... in a way that would make you smile.

One day... they were travelling together... across the open desert. Feel the warm sand, and the wide sky, and the sun on your shoulders. The others had walked on ahead... and for a moment, it was just the two of them.

And the Prophet ﷺ turned to young Aisha... and said... "Come. Let us race."

A race! Across the desert! The Prophet of Allah... rolling up his sleeves... ready to run... just to make a young girl laugh.

And so they ran. Feet flying across the warm sand. The wind rushing past. And Aisha, quick and light, ran faster. Aisha won!

Now... the years went by. And they travelled that same road again. And once more the Prophet ﷺ smiled and said... "Come. Let us race." But this time, Aisha had grown a little older. And this time... he ran faster, and he won. And he laughed gently, and said... "This one... makes up for that one."

Just a race in the sand. A small, simple thing. But it shows us how much love there was in that home. Because the Prophet ﷺ taught us... that the best of people... are the kindest to their own family.

And Aisha was still young enough to love her toys. And the Prophet ﷺ never minded. He let her play. He let her laugh. He let her be a child.

One quiet evening, he came in... and looked, with a kind and curious smile, at all her little toys. And he saw something that made him wonder.

"Aisha," he asked gently, "what is this... here among your toys?"

"It's a horse," she said.

"A horse?" he said. "But... this horse has two wings!"

And Aisha... clever as ever... smiled and said... "Well... haven't you heard? They say Prophet Sulayman, alayhi salaam... had horses... with wings!"

And the Prophet ﷺ laughed. A warm, gentle laugh... so full of joy... that it lit up his whole face. The greatest man who ever lived... never too busy, and never too grand... to laugh with a little child.

And as Aisha grew, her heart grew generous... as wide as the open sky. She loved to give.

One day... they had a whole sheep to cook. Enough food for many, many days. But Aisha gave it away. Piece by piece. To this poor family. To that hungry neighbor. To anyone who came in need. She gave, and gave... until almost the whole sheep was gone.

Later, the Prophet ﷺ asked her, gently... "Is there any of the sheep left?"

Aisha looked. Almost nothing was left. "Nothing remains," she said, "except the shoulder."

And the Prophet ﷺ smiled, and said something so beautiful that we still remember it today. "No," he said. "All of it remains... except the shoulder."

All of it remains. Because everything they gave away... for the sake of Allah... was not gone at all. It was safe... kept with Allah... saved forever. Only the little piece they kept... would soon be finished. So what we give away, little one... is what we truly keep.

And all those years, Aisha kept learning. And Allah had given her a memory like no other. Once something went into Aisha's mind... it stayed. Like beautiful writing... carved deep into stone. And little by little, year after year, the treasure inside her grew. A whole shining world of knowledge... gathered up... inside the heart of one young woman.

And then... a quiet, sad time came to Madinah. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ... returned to his Lord.

And all of Madinah wept. For they loved him... more than anything in the world. The streets felt empty. And the people wondered... how would they go on... without their beloved teacher... to show them the way?

But the beautiful things he had taught... did not disappear. Because Aisha had kept them safe. Every one of them.

And so... slowly... the people began to come to her. Not only children. Not only ordinary people. The great companions came... the brave ones, the wise grey-bearded ones... and they sat down quietly... before Aisha... to learn.

Picture that. The greatest men in the city... listening as gently as children... as a young woman taught them the way of their Prophet, ﷺ. And whenever a hard question came that no one could answer, they would say... "Let us ask Aisha." And she always knew.

Once, someone asked her what the Prophet ﷺ was truly like. And she gave the most beautiful answer of all. She said... "His character... was the Quran." Every kind and gentle thing the Quran teaches... he lived it. And Aisha had seen it... with her own eyes.

The curious little girl... with all the questions... had become the great teacher... with all the answers.

And here is the most wonderful thing of all. So much of what Muslims know today... so many of the beautiful teachings of the Prophet ﷺ... came to us... through Aisha.

She taught them. And they taught others. And those others taught more... on, and on, and on... through hundreds and hundreds of years... like one candle... lighting the next... lighting the next...

...all the way down... to you. Today.

Because Allah tells us in the Quran... that those who know, and those who do not know... are never the same. A heart with knowledge is like a lamp in a dark room. It can see. It can find the way. And it can light the way... for others.

A young girl in Madinah... so very long ago... whose love of learning... became a light... for the whole wide world.

And now... slowly... we leave the golden lamps of Madinah behind... and travel back... all the way home. To right here. Right now.

But you can carry Aisha with you... wherever you go. Because every question you ask... every new thing you learn... every kindness you give away... is precious, and dear to Allah.

So seek knowledge. Be gentle. Give freely. And one day... share your light with the world... just as Aisha did.

He sees you. He hears you. He loves your curious heart.

So carry this little dua with you... today, and every day. It means... my Lord... increase me in knowledge.

We're going to a city called Madinah. A place of soft clay houses... and swaying date palms... where the streets are quiet, and warm little lamps glow gold in every window.

And here we are. Walking down a narrow street... under a wide sky full of stars.

Can you see the little lamps? Glowing soft and golden... in window after window... all through the quiet city. That warm golden light... will stay with us... all through the story.

Can you feel that? That warm, happy feeling... deep in your tummy... when you finally understand something new?

And Allah blessed this curious girl with a most wonderful gift. She came to live... in the home of the Prophet Muhammad, ﷺ, himself. The kindest, wisest teacher who ever walked the earth.

She watched it all... with her bright, careful eyes. And deep inside her clever mind... she kept every word. Safe. Like treasure in a little golden box.

And here is the wonderful thing. Aisha was never, ever shy to ask. Whenever she didn't understand, she would ask the Prophet ﷺ, gently... and he would explain, so patiently, until it was clear. That is how she learned so much. Not just by listening... but by asking. Question... after question... after question.

And do you know how much Allah loves someone who learns? In the Quran, He says...

*Yarfaʿi-llāhu-lladhīna āmanū minkum... wa-lladhīna ūtu-l-ʿilma darajāt.*

"Allah raises up those who believe... and those who are given knowledge... high, and honored."

So every time you learn something good and true... Allah lifts you a little higher. Gently. The way morning lifts the sun.

And that is what happened to Aisha. The curious little girl... was quietly growing... into one of the wisest teachers the whole world would ever know.

And now... slowly... we leave the little golden lamps of Madinah behind... and travel back... all the way home. To right here. Right now.

But you can carry Aisha's question with you... wherever you go. Because every question you ask... every new thing you learn... is precious and dear to Allah. He sees you. He hears you. He loves your curious little heart.

So carry this little dua with you today. It means... my Lord... increase me in knowledge.

The Race in the Desert7 min listen

+

Come with me. Today, we're going on a journey... far, far away... and long, long ago.

Out past the busy towns... past the green fields... past the very last tall trees... until the whole world turns to gold.

And here we are. Standing at the edge of a great... wide... desert.

Feel the warm sand under your feet. Soft... and deep... and golden. The sun is warm on your shoulders. And high above you, the sky is wide, and blue, and endless.

A warm wind comes rolling over the dunes. Can you feel it... brushing softly past your face? Warm... and gentle... and slow.

That warm wind... will stay with us... all the way through the story.

And far away, across the golden sand... a camel bell jingles. And there, rising up out of the desert, is a city. This is Madinah... the city of the Prophet Muhammad, ﷺ.

And long, long ago, in this very place... there lived a young girl named Aisha, radiyallahu anha.

She was clever... and quick... and full of life. And she was married to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ... the kindest person who ever lived.

Now here is something wonderful. The Prophet ﷺ was gentle... and playful... even at home. Especially with someone he loved.

One day... he and Aisha were travelling across this very desert. The others in their group had walked on ahead. And for a little while... it was just the two of them... under that big, open sky.

And the Prophet ﷺ turned to young Aisha... with a smile... and said... "Come. Let us race."

A race! Across the desert! Can you imagine? The Prophet of Allah... rolling up his sleeves... ready to run... just to make a young girl laugh.

Are you ready? Let's run with them.

Feel your feet flying over the warm sand. The wind rushing past your face. Faster... and faster...

And Aisha, young, and quick, and light, pulls ahead... and wins! Aisha won the race!

Can you feel it? That happy, breathless feeling... deep in your chest... of running as fast as you can... and laughing... in the warm desert wind?

Now... many years went by. And one day... they travelled that same desert road again. And once more... the Prophet ﷺ smiled and said... "Come. Let us race."

But this time... Aisha had grown a little older. And this time... the Prophet ﷺ ran faster... and he won. And he laughed, and said... "This one... makes up for that one." As if to say... now we are even, you and I. One race... each.

Just a race in the sand. A small, simple thing. But it shows us something beautiful... about how kind, and gentle, and playful the Prophet ﷺ was... with the people he loved.

Because he taught us something. Listen...

*Khayrukum khayrukum li-ahlih.*

"The best of you... are the ones who are kindest... to their own family."

Not the loudest. Not the strongest. The kindest. The gentlest. The ones who make their family smile.

So wherever you are today... whenever you play, and laugh, and are gentle with the people you love... you are doing something the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself loved to do.

And now... slowly... the warm wind carries us back. Back from the golden desert... all the way home... to right here. Right now.

But we can keep the Prophet's smile with us... wherever we go. And whenever we think of him... we send him our love.

It means... O Allah... send Your blessings upon Muhammad, ﷺ. Say it with me...

*Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā Muhammad.*

The Little Horse with Wings5 min listen

+

Come with me. Today, we're going on a journey... far, far away... and long, long ago.

We're going into a small, cozy home... in the city of Madinah.

And here we are. Stepping softly inside.

Feel how warm it is. One little lamp glows in the corner... soft, and gold, and gentle. A soft woven rug covers the floor. And it is quiet... and cozy... and safe.

That soft golden glow... will stay with us... all through the story.

Because here, in this cozy room, lived a young girl named Aisha, radiyallahu anha. And even though she lived in the home of the Prophet Muhammad, ﷺ, she was still young enough... to love her toys.

And the Prophet ﷺ never minded. Not one bit. He let her play. He let her laugh. He let her be a child.

Look... there she is now... playing on the soft rug... in the warm golden light. Little toys spread out all around her. And sometimes her friends would come... and play right beside her.

Can you feel how cozy that is? Warm, and safe, and happy... playing quietly... in a gentle golden glow?

And do you know what would happen? Sometimes, when the Prophet ﷺ came in... her little friends would feel shy... and quietly slip away.

But the Prophet ﷺ did not want their play to stop. So gently, he would send them right back to her... so they could all keep playing. That is how kind he was... even about a game.

Then one evening... the Prophet ﷺ looked... with a kind and curious smile... at all her little toys. And he saw something that made him wonder.

"Aisha," he asked gently, "what is this... here among your toys?"

"It's a horse," she said.

"A horse?" he said. "But... this horse has two wings!"

And Aisha... clever as ever... smiled and said... "Well... haven't you heard? They say Prophet Sulayman, alayhi salaam... had horses... with wings!"

And the Prophet ﷺ... laughed. A warm, gentle laugh... so full of joy... that it lit up his whole face.

Think of that. The greatest man who ever lived... never too busy... never too grand... to laugh with a little child... about a toy horse with wings.

And here is something to keep in your heart. Even when the Prophet ﷺ played, and smiled, and joked... he only ever said what was true. He told us...

*Innī la-amzaḥu... wa lā aqūlu illā ḥaqqā.*

"I do joke and play... but I only ever say... what is true."

So you can be playful... and gentle... and full of laughter... and still be honest and good. That is the way of the Prophet, ﷺ.

And now... slowly... we leave that warm little room... and its soft golden lamp... and travel back home. To right here. Right now.

But you can carry the Prophet's gentle smile with you... wherever you go today. And you can ask Allah for a heart as beautiful as his. It means... O Allah... make my character beautiful.

*Allāhumma ḥassin khuluqī.*

What Truly Remains5 min listen

+

Come with me. Today, we're going on a journey... far, far away... and long, long ago.

We're going into a small home... in the city of Madinah... in the golden light of evening.

And here we are. Stepping inside.

Can you smell it? Warm food... cooking gently over a small fire. The fire glows soft and orange... and its warmth fills the whole little room.

That warm little fire... will stay with us... all through the story.

Because here lived a young woman named Aisha, radiyallahu anha... in the home of the Prophet Muhammad, ﷺ.

Now here is something to know. The Prophet's home was a simple one. They did not have much at all. Sometimes a whole month would go by... with barely anything to eat but dates and water. Aisha told us that herself.

And yet... Aisha had a heart as generous as the wide open sky. Even with so little... she loved to give.

One day... they were given a whole sheep to cook. Think of it! Enough food for many, many days.

But as the warm fire glowed... and the good smell drifted out into the street... Aisha began to give it away. Piece... by piece. To this poor family. To that hungry neighbor. To anyone at all who came in need.

Can you feel how warm that is? That soft, glowing feeling... right in your heart... of giving something to someone who needs it?

She gave, and she gave, and she gave some more... until almost the whole sheep was gone.

Later, the Prophet ﷺ came home. And he asked her, gently... "Is there any of the sheep left?"

Aisha looked. Almost nothing was left at all. Just one small piece. "Nothing remains," she said, "except the shoulder."

And then the Prophet ﷺ said something so beautiful that Muslims have remembered it... for hundreds and hundreds of years. Listen...

*Baqiya kulluhā... ghayra katifihā.*

"No," he said gently. "All of it remains... except the shoulder."

All of it remains.

Now... wasn't almost the whole sheep given away? Yes. So how could he say... all of it remains?

Here is the beautiful secret. The part they gave away... for the sake of Allah... is not gone at all. It is safe. Kept with Allah. Saved forever... waiting for them... like a treasure that never runs out. Only the little piece they kept for themselves... would soon be finished.

So what we give away... is what we truly keep.

And wherever you are today... when you share your food... or give away a toy... or are kind to someone who has less... none of it is ever wasted. Allah keeps every bit of it... safe... for you.

And now... slowly... we leave that warm little home... and its glowing fire... and travel back. To right here. Right now.

But you can carry Aisha's kindness with you. And when you eat today, you can thank the One who gives us everything. It means... all praise is for Allah... who fed us... and gave us drink.

*Alḥamdu lillāhi... alladhī aṭʿamanā... wa saqānā.*

We're going back to the city of Madinah... to meet a great teacher.

And here we are. In a quiet courtyard... as the evening comes softly down.

Look... someone has lit a candle. And with its little flame... they lean over... and light another. And that one... lights another. Little flames... passing light... one to the next... all around the courtyard.

That gentle, glowing light... will stay with us... all through the story.

Do you remember Aisha, radiyallahu anha? The curious little girl who loved questions... and lived in the home of the Prophet Muhammad, ﷺ?

For years and years, she had listened, and learned, and remembered every single word. Her heart was full of treasure... a whole shining world of knowledge.

What you give is what you keep

She gave away nearly a whole sheep, and the Prophet ﷺ taught that all of it remained except the piece kept back.

Kindness at home

The races and the laughter in her home show that the best of people are the kindest to their own family.

Questions about Aisha

Who was Aisha bint Abu Bakr?+

Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, was the daughter of Abu Bakr as-Siddiq and a wife of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, one of the Mothers of the Believers. She became one of the most important scholars and narrators of hadith in Islam, teaching the companions after the Prophet's ﷺ passing.

Why is Aisha important in Islam?+

Because so much of what Muslims know about the Prophet's ﷺ daily life, prayer, and character was preserved and taught by her. The companions turned to her for knowledge (Tirmidhi), and she described the Prophet ﷺ in one line: “His character was the Qur'an” (Muslim).

Is Aisha mentioned in the Quran?+

Not by name. The Qur'an calls the wives of the Prophet ﷺ the Mothers of the Believers (al-Ahzab 33:6), and Aisha is among them. Her life and teachings are recorded in the hadith collections such as Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud, and Tirmidhi.

What did Aisha say about the Prophet's character?+

When asked what the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was like, Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, answered, “His character was the Qur'an” (Sahih Muslim), meaning that every kindness, patience, and virtue the Qur'an teaches, he lived out every day.

What can children learn from Aisha?+

To love learning and never be shy to ask questions; to give generously, because what is given for Allah is what truly remains; and to be gentle and playful with family, as the Prophet ﷺ was in his own home.
