The story of Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, is one of the most loved stories in all of Islam, because it begins in the most surprising place: with an enemy. Umar was not born a hero of this faith. He became one, and the moment his heart changed is a story children ask to hear again and again.

The strongest man in Mecca

In Mecca, everyone knew Umar. He was tall and powerful, and people stepped aside when he walked through the street. In those early days he stood against the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and the small band of Muslims, and the believers feared his temper. No one imagined that this man, of all people, would one day carry Islam on his shoulders.

The day his heart changed

One day Umar heard that his own sister, Fatimah, had quietly accepted Islam. He went to her home in anger, and found there a page of the Qur'an, verses from Surah Ta-Ha. When he read those words about Allah, the Most Merciful, something inside him went still. The strongest man in Mecca was moved by a page he could not put down. He walked straight to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and this time not in anger: he came to declare that there is no god but Allah. The Muslims' fiercest opponent became their shield.

Praying in the open

Before Umar accepted Islam, the Muslims prayed quietly and out of sight. After he joined them, they walked to the Kaaba and prayed openly, with Umar standing among them. The same strength that once frightened people now protected them. That is why he was called al-Faruq: the one who tells truth apart from falsehood.

The leader who walked at night

Years later, after the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ had passed away and Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, had led after him, Umar became the leader of the Muslims. He ruled a vast land, yet he lived simply and feared Allah in everything. It is related that he would walk the streets of Madinah at night to see how ordinary people were doing, and when he found a family in need, he carried food to them with his own hands. For Umar, being a leader meant being a servant.

What children learn from Umar

  • Hearts can change. Nobody is too far away; the Qur'an reached the heart everyone thought was hardest.
  • Strength is for protecting. Real strength stands guard over the weak instead of frightening them.
  • Leaders serve. The most powerful man of his time carried food through the dark for a family in need.
