The Story of Prophet Yusuf for Kids

The dream, the well, Egypt, and the forgiveness at the end — Yusuf's story told simply for little ones.

5 min read

The story of Prophet Yusuf (Joseph), peace be upon him, is the one Allah Himself calls "the most beautiful of stories" (Surah Yusuf 12:3). It's a wonderful story to tell Muslim children because it carries a child gently from sadness to hope — and ends not with revenge, but with forgiveness.

The dream

When Yusuf was a boy, he had a dream: eleven stars, the sun, and the moon all bowed down to him. His father, Prophet Yaqub, understood it was a sign of the great honour Allah had planned for his son — and told him to keep the dream to himself.

The well

Yusuf's brothers were jealous of how much their father loved him. One day they took him far from home and left him at the bottom of a deep, dark well. A passing caravan found him and carried him all the way to Egypt, where he was raised in the house of a great man.

Egypt and the prison

In Egypt, Yusuf was blamed for something he did not do, and he was put in prison for years. Even there, he stayed honest and kind, and he helped the other prisoners. Allah gave him the gift of understanding dreams — and one day the king of Egypt had a dream that no one could explain.

From prisoner to minister

Yusuf explained the king's dream: seven good years would come, then seven years of hunger, so the people should store their food carefully. The king was so amazed that he freed Yusuf and put him in charge of all of Egypt's food. The forgotten boy from the well became one of the most trusted men in the land.

The forgiveness

When the years of hunger came, Yusuf's brothers travelled to Egypt for food — and stood before him without knowing who he was. Yusuf could have punished them. Instead, he forgave them completely, and brought his whole family to live with him in Egypt. The dream from his childhood had come true.

What children learn from Yusuf

  • Patience. Yusuf trusted Allah through the well, the palace, and the prison.
  • Honesty. He told the truth even when a lie might have freed him sooner.
  • Forgiveness. Given power over those who hurt him, he chose mercy.
